Marketing for Chiropractic Students
You passed many of your exams and now you are in a student clinic trying to get your student clinic credits going. I am not sure what the requirements now for new graduates but 14 years ago you had to have 200 outpatient adjustments within 15 months. Seems like a big number but in a real world you will go bankrupt with seeing that many patients for that period of time. I was shocked that many of my student clinic comrades were complaining about this requirement. The hardest part for them was to bring in new patients from outside world and have them pay for a care provided at a student clinic.
Chiropractic student clinic should not be treated any different than a real word clinic. If you can deliver great results, by providing an awesome chiropractic care and bring in good numbers of new patients from outside into your student clinic you are going to make it big in a real world. Whatever is going to happen at the student clinic will help you transform into a great chiropractor in a real world. If you struggle with numbers and your adjusting skills are not that great it is time to polish your skills while you are in a chiropractic school and your student loan is paying for your rent and food. Once you are out you will have only 6 months before your student loan pay back kicks in and your overhead expenses suddenly will increase at least $1000 a month. Also you need to consider that right after graduation you will not get any student loans. That means that all of your expenses are going to be on you.
What can you do to be ready for a real world?
If you speak more than one language I suggest that you use it to your full advantage. There are many communities that speak Hindu, Urdu, Russian, Spanish, Chinese etc. These communities will have someone who has neck or lower back pain and would have never consider going to see a chiropractor till they have met you. You will be able to explain to them in their native language what their problem is and how you can solve it with chiropractic care. I finished my student clinic this way in 6 months. Initial boost for my practice was based on the same formula.
Make sure that you treat your patients at a student clinic as a royalty. Show that you care. Do spend the time examining them, deliver great report of findings, and deliver the greatest asset you are possessing which is an awesome chiropractic adjustment. Follow up with them next day and ask them how they are doing after their first chiropractic experience. It will make them feel special and you are creating a foundation for a future referral patient base. Things are the same way in a real world except no one is breathing over your shoulder by supervising and giving you credit.
Assuming you did everything right and you finished your student clinic requirements early you will end up having 2 options. Number one option – you can party your brains out and waste a valuable time. Option number two you will find an established clinic that will let you do your preceptorship. Preceptorship is when you are practicing under supervision of a licensed chiropractor.
Bring all of your patients to your preceptorship clinic and start charging them regular fee that any chiropractic office charges in that particular area. Back in days internet marketing for chiropractors was in its infant stages and probably did not even exist. So, I did spinal screenings at a local Bart Station till I have graduated and got my licensed and began using conventional advertising such as newspaper etc. to increase my new patient pool.
Today new graduate can establish a great presence on line via blog prior to graduation and prior getting a license. Of course new graduates can’t call themselves doctors of chiropractic. However, there is no law that prohibits publish blog posts about any health related topic including chiropractic field. You can write about your success stories at the student clinic. Use social media channels to distribute your content. Let people around your chiropractic school know that you exist and want to help them to solve their health related problem with chiropractic care.
If you follow al of the above steps, by the time you graduate you can have a small practice that will pay your rent and grocery bills. At the time of graduation your preceptorship will turn into postceptorship. A fair deal would be 50/50 split on everything you bring into a clinic with a cap. Cap will depend on licensed doctor’s overhead.
Good luck and hope to see you on a battlefield soon.
